A leviathan variation or some other monster comes aboard via a dimensional portal created in a P.P.E. storm.

These come immediately to mind.

I was in a victim game similar to that. A Rift opened and the cruise ship was boarded by Hounds from Nightbane.

Depends on what you're going for. A few ideas:

1) The ship passes THROUGH a Rift, landing in the Bahamas or somesuch... but its a Bahamas still under the control of the British Navy, which has been growing stronger since it put down those radicals back in 1776.

2) The ship gets infested with haunting entities. You could go the traditional route that these haunting entities point to a sinister secret aboard the ship (maybe the crew is actually a cult, that sacrifices one or more passengers... or new crew... per voyage), or the haunting entities can have come through a Rift, and are from an alternate reality where someone who is now very much alive died in some horrible fashion. The PCs, of course, would know nothing about this... they just know that a ghost looking like X is wandering around getting constantly disemboweled.

3) Poltergeists. However, instead of being random, they've been summoned (by a psychic or arcanist) and are causing a very directed havoc... a quarter of the attacks happen to one person (ex-wife? rich man who is being blackmailed?), while the rest are spread out around the ship. Poltergeists play havoc with navigation, and you have no idea where you are and cannot contact shore.

4) A tectonic entity made up of deck chairs. I just love this mental image.

Oooh, I like the Gremlins. It gives everyone something to deal with, can highlight the abilities of a Psi-Mechanic, and the weather issue (a hurricane?) makes everything urgent.

I'm worried about all that space for the little gremlins to hide; you'd never find them. Maybe a diviner maybe could track them down but the gremlins would have run about so much that he'd end up walking in circles probably. I'd have to think about it some more but off the top of my head that doesn't sound like a good time for the players.

Tracking the little gremlins on a typical cruise liner? I still doubt it.

Now if the gremlins never leave the engine room... but I think they would, in order to hide and perhaps throw trackers off the trail. They're not stupid after all.

You don't actually need to catch all of them. You do need to get them away from the engine room enough to get basic repairs... then you limp to port and thoroughly disinfect the ship.

How much would it cost to do a thorough exorcism of a cruise liner?

They'd be all over the liner reprogramming the navigation computer, boobytrapping the captain's loo, electrifying the pool, ...

Not to mention ship security keeping the PCs out of certain places, like the engine room, unaware of the threat they're actually protecting.

If there's just 1 gremlin then things are a bit easier. More than one though is likely a nightmare scenario and killing the entire PC team is in the realm of possibility.
