I would want meals in a can (Ensure etc)*, whichever ones are the most nutritionally complete, long lasting, easy to consume, and capable of remaining more or less at peak efficiency with long term subsistence. Otherwise, dog food, for the same reasons, though not as easy to eat on the go.

Well if there is no way to add to the food or prep it only thing that comes to mind is cans of pork and beans. I know, i know, some of you are talking about the rear gas factor, but i have nothing to worry about as it doesn't give me gas, so i'll be fine. ;)

Actually offending zombies wasn't an issue, just that i imagined people would be talking about how much lack of oxygen i'd be having as i eat the stuff in my shelter as time passes by. Glad you like the food though. :D *Passes a few cans to Greyaxe*

I'd have to go with my Grandma's Dutch Apple Pie (trust me, its well worth the capitalization). She makes it in a PIZZA pie pan, so it’s about 18" across and 2.5/3 deep, with a thick, caramelized crust of brown sugar. Heat it up, add a little bit of milk or ice cream, it’s the closest thing you'll get to perfection this side of Heaven. And the best part is, if you leave it out for a few days, you'll start attracting flies (which you can catch and eat if your really desperate for other food).

If I can't have that, then I'll take some long pork (and what food they would have brought will be MINE).

Yeah, Granny's  great , unfortunatley she only makes her Uber-Pies about three or four times a year (mainly because it costs about $50 in material and roughly four hours to cook), but one pie could feed a family of five for a week. Its always a treat, but its limited to Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July and her birthday (cause she don't like cake, and everybody likes her pie), so there's always fights to get left overs to take home.

Severite, your probably right, but I wouldn't have too many qualms about doing so if it meant my survival (and my family too), but it would have to be a last resort. The trick is to pick the right side dishes and sauces, lots of apple- and barbeque-sauce, and not to let the other diners know what their eating.

Oh, starvation will convince you to do a great many things, and, like I said, it will probably be rather common, just, well, ewwww

On the flip side, if zombieification happens overnight, and less than 2% of the population excapes the initial attacks, then I think the food will last a very long time. But thats me, lol

Well, for all my comments about the utilities and how I think they wouldn't go down in another thread, I do tend to agree that food could be a problem, although I do tend to think the water would keep flowing for a good, long while.

Understand that food is stocked for mass consumption, the shelf life of most items isn't all that long. A couple of months tops in *MOST* cases. This means more demand for the things that aren't perishable, divided between whatever survivors there are who would be grabbing as much as they can, and stockpiling. Even canned goods don't last as long as a lot of people think, which is why even today you have people killing themselves from Bochalism <SP> or whatever, thinking that canned food is nearly indestructable. Notice it DOES have an expiration date on it.

So, as a result your going to find most of the baked goods, milk products, and meat, stocked are going to be rotted if it wasn't consumed. After a while even the canned goods aren't going to be paticularly safe.

So yes, getting food would be a problem, especially in heavily urbanized areas. Plus while a lot of people know how to farm, and properly dress and prepare animals, many (like me) do not.

Of course today my reliance on medication would probably cause me more problems, faster.

But then again that is probably why I have some of my attitudes about a post apocolyptic zombie uprising type scenario (if I think about it IRL). One way or another I'm doomed if I just let things collapse entirely, and nothing is going to change if I just sit there barracaded in a room, hoping someone else would do something.

But then again I'm a mess, so all mental exercises aside, who the heck knows what would happen nowadays.

Well, I think a year is a long time to rely on scavenged food, and most cans will last years as long as they are packaged well and are not breached in any way, but yeah, you will have to be carefull, for instance, if the can is dented, has signs of swelling etc, then pass on it.

By the time canned goods are becoming suspect scavenging should probably no longer be the main method for acquiring sustenance.

Um, about the canned goods having expiration dates, they are there mostly because of FDA regulations and the majority of dates are usually 2-3 years after canning.

As an aside, a can of peaches from a stash dated back to the Napoleanic wars was opened and was still edible so as long as the can itself isnt damaged the food inside should be edible, maybe not fresh from the garden good but edible.

Well, with that said, it also has a lot to do with the quality of the canning, since if it is not canned well(it has air, can wasn't sealed correctly, etc), the it will expire fairly quickly.

Wow, necro thread.

My 2 cents, if we are going to go with a type, I'd say MREs. If we are going to narrow it a little more, I'd say Cliff bars.

If we need to narrow it further than that, I'd say either blueberry crisp or oatmeal raisin Cliff bars (I like some of them, like the cool mint and chocolate brownie ones more, but I think I'd get sick of those if they were all I ate much faster).

they don't have all the nutrition you possibly need, but they've got most of the basics in them, aren't unhealthy, taste decent (though I think eating the samething of anything is going to get boring/bland/disgusting after a few days) and are portable and last awhile.
