I'm not sure if this has been asked before. I looked but didn't find it so here goes.
I've got a character with rocket fists. Which I'm totally okay with, fun power. The question is one of collateral damage. If he's gonna be blasting to full speed in half a melee (7 seconds,) a speed that's only going to increase as he levels. What kind of a sonic boom are we talking about here? I was thinking something along the lines of the boom gun rules. The player is actually worried about it and it being very careful of where and when he launches. It's making for great roleplaying, but I wanted to get some opinions of what would go down when he finally has to launch in a bad spot. Say a crowded city street, or downtown surrounded by glass and steel high rises.
Thanks For any ideas all.

Rocket Fist take-off issues.
The more you learn, the less you know.
Re: Rocket Fist take-off issues.
A sonic boom is not necessarily dangerous. The cracking sound of a snapping whip is technically a sonic boom. Further, the energy of a sonic boom is proportional to the size of the pressure waves which create it - ones generated by a fist-sized projectile would be negligible.

Doesnt a field of some sort envelope the character when flying?
If so, just say that it (the field) dampens the sonic boom.

That might work.... Addressing the earlier post about size. While his hands are generating the energy, his whole body is breaking the sound barrier. But you're right. It would still be a more minor effect. Then again. How big is a round of boom gun ammo?

True while his body would be moving at the speeds it's the energy field that protects him from the G forces, cold, flaming reentry and such. so just slap the "field negates sonic boom start ups" and live and let live.

Dude don't use the boom gun as an example. It's effects have been exaggerated out of proportion so the weapon would have a draw back.
You would have basically the equivalent of 2 of these rockets going off at your hands. That should give you a good idea of the effects happening at take off. This is also great shot off a very near sonic boom. I find that good visuals help me come up with description for my game play. Hope they help.
