Changing OCC's

All skills, powers, abilities of the old OCC are frozen. They will remain so UNLESS selected again with skills from the new OCC. Skills from the new OCC are limited to OCC and OCC related only. The OCC skills begin upon the new OCC without the OCC bonuses. Upon achieving 0 XP OCC skill bonuses are applied and OCC Related skills are selected as normal. The new OCC is reduced to negative XP equal to the ammount required for 2nd level. Skills selected to unfreeze old OCC skills are NOT unfrozen until the new occ level surpasses the old. HP does not increace until the same event occurs. You need to be 3rd level or higher to change OCC, and you can't change to an OCC you don't meet the requirements for (so you can't become a chiang ku tattoo master unless you are already a chiang ku, and you can't become a mind melter unless you are already a master psi. and so on).

I use the old Robotech and the PF rules for changing OCCs but I also make you find the teacher

This is one reason that I prefer the skill programs from HU and N&SS over the standard OCC picks from RIFTS and ROBOTECH. The MOS system is a nice addition to it, but primarily only works well for pure military games.

If there is a clear need to change OCC, I just toss in the "new" OCC skills with NO BONUS and characters do not get any new OCC related or secondary skills. The level of the character remains the same, but now uses the new chart, thus an 8th level CS grunt leaves and becomes a gunslinger, he keeps all his OLD skills, and gains all the gunslinger skills (only OCC skills) and is now an 8th level CS grunt forever and a 0 level gunslinger, and when he gains enough XP to make 9th level on the gunslinger chart, he is now an 8th level CS grunt and a 1st level gunslinger, at 10th level he is an 8/2...

OCC changes can ONLY be made when a character levels up, otherwise I knock the XP back to the starting amount for that level...

Basically, think D20 with regard to split OCC's.

The official published rules concerning multiple classes are in the High Seas book.

The below are just the 'munchkin' posted quickie rules for changing class.

The basics are, your char can only progress in one class at a time. So any NPC that lists multiple classes means that they progressed through each class individually up to the level listed. And, RCC's & PCC's can not change classes, ever.

Other places that talk about changing class, 1st ed RT books 1: the char has to be 3rd level before they can change class. RCB1: chars coming from other worlds can change to similar rifts classes if not more then 3rd-4th level.

I looked in the parts of RUE that should of contained any changing class rules and couldn't find any.

similar: Man-at-arms to man-at-arms, or men-of-magic to men-of-magic, scholar to scholar, etc...

I use the D&D sytem of 1,000 exp. times level to gain a level,(for all OCCs) you can select a new class any time, but I add in the caveat of finding an instructor, plus OCC related skills for new class are reduced by half, and no secondary skills. Or you can use the Palladium "official" rules.

This is how I do it:

1) To get a new OOC, you must first RP the fact that you actually learn from someone (As an example: The Ley Line Walker in my campaign started to work in a small Hovercycle garage in New Lazlo in between adventures and she has always been interested in racing with them. So now after a while, she wanted to become an Operator. The player has done some excellent RP and really stayed in character and really loved playing having a mundane job - This has taken about 10-15 sessions and 5 months ingame-time).

2) You must have at least 10.000 xp in your first class and it will cost (level1) Xp in the new class. For example if you want to switch to Operator - you will have to first have 10.000 xp, then the next 1900 xp is used as a payment to become the next class. They are not recorded on the sheet, they are gone.

3) You will get all the special Skills/Abilities (+20 Find Contraband in the example above, Better Jury-rigging, etc.) All the OOC Skills, half the OOC-related and half the Secondary Skills. But you will not get any attribute bonuses, PPE, ISP, Saves or such things. Those are only for the peole who dedicates enogh time to actually have the OOC as a primary profession. Which means that you cannot second-class yourself as a Psionic, Magic User e.t.c.).

4) You will get a new xp chart so it will say on your character sheet:
Ley Line Walker (Level 4) / 10.000 xp,
Operator (Level 1) / 0 Xp
And you must split the incoming xp as evenly you can between them, so if you get 1000 xp for a session, then 500 xp will go to each profession.

You cannot become any Magic-User OOC, RCC or PCC as a secondary class, with the exception of cyberknight (you will be a non-psionic cyberknight with p-sword/shield only). Maybe if something bizarre happened, like getting trapped in a ley line storm or the like, I will allow you becoming a magic-User. I have to look at it when time comes

But this is the way I do.

Sounds like you got a good system down,if you run into problems let us know.

The only problem? is that the characters seems to get a humungous bunch of skills even if I halve the numbers of OOC related and secondary skills.

Wow, you must hit 15th level really fast in extended campaigns! (comparatively). The Japan campaign I was in would've had us all at around 12-14th level after the 1.5 years it ran meeting once a week!

Nah not really, I use the D&D 3.0 exp. table but apply Rifts exp. points, Sorry if I was confusing. :D
After some recent consideration tho' I gotta retract my earlier standards on 2nd OCCs, I now allow full OCC, OCC related, and secondary-caveat being instructor access and time spent learning new OCC, but old skills remain frozen unless reselected.
