Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Just a heads up. AMC's Walking dead starts back up tonight.
Sucks that it's up against Dexter and Homeland. I'm gonna be recording some stuff.

Speaking of the Walking Dead.
Is it just me or is it a jerk move for the ex-cop to dress up in his sheriff's outfit?
I don't know why it bothers me, it just rubs me the wrong way. His buddy isn't dressed as a cop, but for some reason Sheriff Grimes has to.
Is it that he's such a control freak that he has to be in charge, so he wears his uniform or does he lack any other sense of identity, other than his former job?

I'm sure it's very much part of his identity. Some people that go into law enforcement honestly do it to help others, and they very much identity themselves as "Police" and "Protectors" first and 'Husband" and "Dude" Second. For him it's probably a tangible link to a world that had order and logic and sense. A grip that he's not yet ready to relinquish in the world of the damned where the dead walk. His unconcious wish that some how order and sanity can be returned.
I'll be curious how long this show is going to go. The Graphic Novels go some DARK places. (( that often have little to do with the zombies)).

Hey PJ, funny that you say that as there is a scene in the church in episode 1 of season 2 that explains exactly that.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
What I really found interesting about the first new episode was yeah he's supposed to be the Sheriff, the calm one in charge, but he goes and screws up and loses that little girl in the woods.
So he will really be clinging to his cop suit...which I would think would be totally stank by now with all the blood and guts that have been splattered all over it.

I wish they'd get some semblance of organization.
Why they just didn't put the kids on top of the RV with the old man is beyond me...they should not have been surprised the way they were.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
They don't have the benefit of years of RPG experience behind them. If it were us, we would have had someone on top of the RV and two down each way on the highway and only one group scavenging with one personwatching the RV for a signal and the RV watching the two scouts for a signal. Before this we would have identified safe hiding places where the Zeds wouldn't see you if they shuffled through. And DAMN we would be scavenging like heck for batteries, cb radios, 12V converters to create more power from the vehicles and using these to create better communication. Heck, I'd issue everyone a GPS if we found them so that they could find their way back if they got separated. Heck they have combo GPS/CB whic would be perfect for that function. And I would be rigging up a makeshift silencer that you could get at least one shot off to get rid of a problem Zed without alerting the others.

There scavenging skills leave a bit to be desired. I saw the 50 cals at the end of last season and thought, may not be too useful against zombies but human bandits will back off with a few rounds at them. Hopefully we wil see them get more wise as the season moves on.

The CDC irked me, since they had all those weapons and ammo lying around, all those military vehicles filled with diesel fuel which could have kept the generators going and I'm sure that with the situation as it was, they had a few tankers around the CDC to refuel the vehicles. Raid a local RV dealer for some diesel run RVs and grab a full tanker or fuel truck. Plus you get a big moving truck to store supplies and spare parts. Heck have you seen dump trucks that have a plow on the front, they would make a great cargo truck with a tarp put over top of the dump bucket and it would be usefull to move abandoned cars out on the highway and run over any stray Zeds.

Dang you stole my thunder...yeah why waste your time fixing a broken down 60's vintage RV when there are new ones O'plenty I'm sure within driving distance.
Here's what they should have in their caravan.
-Something big up front with a plow to clear the highway. Semi or armored car.
-A nice modern RV with massive fuel tanks and all the bells and whistles.
-A telephone company bucket truck so someone can go high to see further distances and get access to 2nd story buildings or roofs.
-A fuel truck...diesel.
Also- where's the body armor or thick clothes? That always bothers me about these zombie movies, if you were head to toe in biker leathers with a helmet, you'd be very safe in a lot of big scrums.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Plus, don't know where to find all stuff, pick up the damned Yellow Pages and a map from the corner store (yet another place that may have a little bit of fuel in the tanks). Tired of siphoning off fuel out of tanks, get a hand pump at any hardware store that they sell with those rolling jerry cans. Find that you stink, there are rivers and brooks everywhere. Don't go driving around all wide-eyed like a tourist, pay attention and be aware of your surroundings. If the stores have been looted, like they showed in ep 1 check the car wrecks on the highway. Speaking of highways, don't waist your whole day travelling, give yourself plenty of time and daylight to find a secure hole to hide out in for the night and never let your fuel reserves go low, take every opportunity to fill your tanks.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Yeah
A) why were they splitting up at all to search vehicles. 1 person searching the vehicle, 1 person watching around the vehicles. Kids IN the RV or within 10ft of it at all times unless being escorted for a potty break.
B) 2 people on top of the RV, one of the adults and maybe one of the kids just to give them a job to do
C) Why the heck did they leave the pile of scavenged stuff sitting on the pavement when looking for the little girl?
D) Why didn't they keep the baseball bats, etc from last season? Doesn't everyone know the best way to take out a zombie is up close in personal if it is 1-on-1? Its soooo much quieter that way.
E) Why in God's good name would you let your son approach a buck? I mean, were you tragically dropped on your head as a baby? They've got antlers #1 and worse #2 they've got sharp hooves. That is just asking to be gored, kicked or stompped supposing you don't simply just scare the thing off
F) What the hell kind of hunter wouldn't see the kid on the other side of the deer (okay deer is taller, but still hard to miss) or even more so, the two adults standing about 20ft behind the kid? That is one myopic hunter shooting over iron sights from really, really far away in those woods. Its not like they were hidding in the bushes down range from the deer.
G) Why the heck was was-his-name wasting so much time "bathing" in the water jug? You found some water and are running low??? Sweet, start grabbing jugs and slinging them on to the vehicles you are driving. Same with any other scavenged stuff. You know time is of the essence and you don't want to be there longer than you need to be, so act like it!

It's TV entertainment. Not real life. If people did all the "right" things in the case of a zombie rise, it wouldn't be very fun to watch.
A) they split up like that to increase the drama and so different people could find different things and it was more 'scary' when the small wave of zombies shuffeled through.
B) They did have one adult up there but Zombies are slow and he wasn't just facing one direction. Two people up there might have wasted someone who could be scavaging, but if you watched, he turned out to be up there for a reason. to pass the woman the screw driver in the bathroom
C) Why not? It's not like zombies are going to steal it, and (( at this point in the series)) It's not like they're fighting off other humans for supplies. Granted I'd have thrown it in the cars too but.. less dramatic. It's TV. They have to SHOW you what they've found. it's a visual medium.
D) It strikes me that they probably do have such things, but again they're going for the drama. And did anyone notice GERBER Is totally a sponsor this year? I have gerber tools and blades. They're good stuff but yeah... that's probably why. So they could find the roll of gerber tools. So Gerber could be on screen 10 times.
E) It was one of those "eye of the storm" Moments. You're out in the woods with your kid. Zombie apocolypse, Pretty deer comes out. You figure it'll bound away before your kid gets up to it.... and... it's TV.. they let him approach it because it put him in the line of fire.
F) Are you kidding? Tales of hunters doing ---exactly--- that are common. Tunnel vision while on the hunt. They lock in on their target and see nothing else. Sure you're supposed to 'Look deep' but every year people die this way. I mean Dick Cheney shot his friend in the face with a shot gun and made the guy apologize to him! But no, it's not uncommon at all. Why do you think hunters are supposed to wear bright orange? It's not for the fashion. It's because it was getting out of hand with them getting shot wearing cammo.
G) I had this thought too, but again. TV. Visual medium. Why did what's his nname waste so much time bathing in the water jug? For the females in the audience. If it was a pretty woman drenching herself in water you might have the same query but not in complaint form. lol They were catering to the people that like seeing burly sweaty wet men. Nothing too deep.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Oh I understand TV, drama it up, but my biggest issue is with all 7 together just seemed like they were complete idiots. If there were only a couple of those going on it wouldn't have seemed so bad to me. Instead of seemed like a giant clusterF going on like its a bunch of 13 year old (a bunch of 13-yr olds who have never watched a zombie movie of played an RPG to boot!).
I also still go back to the guy on top of the RV. Unless he was all tunnel vision for several minutes I don't get how he missed the zombies for so long. They didn't appear to have shambled right out of the woods to the end of the vehicle grave yard and start shambling along. LOS otherwise was at least a good 300-400yds beyond the end of the cars down the road and 30-60yds from the edge of the road to the tree line along the road. If he was doing even a half assed job of looking around he should have had at least an extra minute or two of warning.
For me with C, its less an issue that they showed it and more an issue that the couple of guys left at the RV while everyone is off looking could have been shown having their "The RV is really fixed, I don't want us heading down that morale turnpike" conversation while loading stuff in to the RV/cars instead of just standing around.
I did also notice the gerber sponsorship. I have the hatchets little brother for backpacking.
PS I know plenty of hunting accidents and deaths occur every year, but unless I am badly mistaken few occur because the hunter didn't notice someone standing 15ft behind the deer they are shooting it. Most are misses that hit someone dozens of yds down range or more and/or are litterally potshots at what the hunter thinks might be a deer that is obscured.
I am not saying it could never in a million years happen, but with my limited hunting experience I would think it would be an extremely unlikely occurance (more more than a typical hunting accident). TV drama, but I would have liked it better if they had seen the deer from their original position and were "fawning" over it (pun intended) and Carl accidently got shot by some hunter instead of walking all up to it so that he could almost reach out and touch it and a through and through happened.

Hum...well Sheriff Grimes thusfar has been the luckiest bastard still alive.
First, how many people still have their entire nuclear family intact?
Secondly, what are the odds of someone actually waking up out of a coma and escaping from a zombie filled hospital?
Thirdly, what are the odds that somebody being able to find their spouse and child who like I said in number one, have not been eaten?
If I was in that survivor group, I'd probably be envious of Grimes to the point of bitterness.
How is he so lucky when everyone else has been decimated...hell more than decimated. Decimation is losing 1 out of 10.

Latest episode I think is showing a hint of the graphic novels. Granted Rick knows what is coming with those two guys in the bar, but he deffinitely doesn't hesitate and blowing them away.

I think the show needs to move to showtime or HBO, that way they can take the gloves off.

Is it me, or is Lori even MORE annoying?
They can't see me...Right!?
Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
They painted Lori with the same brush in the TV series as the comic. She really doesn't think much before she does anything. She doesn't seem to realize that taking off alone in secret is a very bad idea in a Zombie apocalypse. I'm still wondering why she needed to leave (to get Rick) at all? She knew that he was going to get Hershel and would return as soon as possible. She's just dumb...
Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Any commentary on this latest batch of episodes?
What are Shane and Rick going to do with Raymond? Any speculation?

Not sure based on the preview for next weeks episode. I personally think they should give the kid a chance. Their situation isn't so imminently dangerous that they can't spare a person or two to keep an eye on him at all times except when "sleeping" in which case they can always tie/lock him up for the night. I'd say give him a chance for a few weeks and see how he is fitting in.
If push comes to shove or there are any real doubts down the road, ice him. Otherwise, he could potentially be another contributing member of the group.
I will also say, there seemed to be some evidence that Rick scavenged some pistols and ammo off of the dead officers in the last episode, but seriously? Shane and Rick spent almost no time looking over what appeared to be a state or county police depot/barracks. I know they managed to get a fair amount of ammo and guns from Rick's bag from their police station...but it isn't that much ammo, especially not after leaving some with the group in Atlanta. They have, what? At most maybe a thousand rounds give or take a little and maybe a dozen guns including pistols? That isn't a lot of survive on for a group that size.
Yes it would be boring to have spent half the show just showing them poking around the facility and it would have defeated the whole zombie suprise later...but still man, come on. Show that they've got a little intelligence.

Rick stated they need to start scavaging and looking for supplies as well as preparing for the future...and to THINK before they start taking out zombies. Something Shane has not done...he just blasts away.
Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Hmm... So Shane and Rick had their little talk and all is good now? Shane admitted killing Otis. That should be enough for Rick to do something. He is still a dangerous murderer and Rick shouldn't have let his guard down like he did. Nothing good can come of this.
As for Raymond, I think they should just drop him off somewhere far, far away and be done with him. They're crazy to think they can stay on that farm anyway. It won't be long until some more unsavory characters find them there.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
My other issue. They showed that zombie wandering the field beside the road twice.
I mean how friggen hard is to to pull up on the side of the road, grab an axe out of the back of the car, have someone watching all around and the passenger get out and cut down the zombie?
Every zombie less in the world is one less trying to eat my brains, the brains of those I care about, or turn someone else in to a zombie that wants to do the above.
I am not saying take on a group of dozens...too dangerous. A lone zombie or two? I'd make the time unless something important was going on.
Just sayin'.

Don't forget that every zombie you leave behind could potentially follow in your direction. Oh yeah, and every one of them you leave behind becomes a problem for somebody else. It may be dog-eat-dog out there, but we're all in it together. Do yourself and your fellow survivors a favor and thin the herd when you can. Right?

Yeah, I'm not sure why they didn't take it upon themselves to run the 4x4 through the field and grease the underside of the car with some zed blood in that situation. I can understand that one zed might mean more, and if you stop and get out and cross a large field you might not make it back to the car. But you're in a 4x4, for pete's sake!
I agree that one less zed on the streets is one less zed that wants to snack on my tender, tasty brains. And if it's 2 on 1? Bye, bye, zed!

Maybe because it was not a 4x4, it was a prius (I think).

Yeah. Also they are a long way from home. If they stopped to kill every wayward zombie they came across it would be a waste of time, energy, fuel and maybe ammo. It's just not worth it. When they get close to home I think they would take the time and effort to waste any potential threat.

It was not, IIRC it was a Hyundai, though I don't know that any Hyundais are 4WD or AWD.

Re: Walking Dead Starts back up tonight.
Sorry, but I saw SUV and immediately thought it was a 4x4. If it wasn't, then that's my bad.
Still, part of the episode focused on Rick and Shane using quieter methods to deal with the zed infestation when it's just one or two walkers. why not get out of the car, lure it back to the road, then knife the thing? Yeah, it takes time and energy. But it's still one less zed that wants to snack on them.

Sure, if your gung-ho about killing a single zombie in the middle of nowhere. Also state of mind means a whole lot in any situation. Shane and Rick get into a fight. They find out that Randal knows their location. The entire trip becomes a waste of resources and time. So they head back after almost being killed/infected. I bet they didn't even want to deal with even one zombie at that point.
Not to mention that they are hundreds of miles away from their safe haven. They drove for hours (Note the four gas cans they packed for the trip) trying to find a place to just leave Randal, likely taking a surreptitious rout so he wouldn't have any idea where or how far he was from their haven. The likelihood that that one zombie is going to cause a problem in the future is nil. Why bother wasting any more consumable resources on one forlorn zombie?
Also **** happens. Have you ever rolled a natural 1 trying to do the simplest of tasks and completely botch it? One zombie or not, there is still risk of **** going wrong and one or more of the group getting injured, infected, or dead. All because you decided that one zombie hundreds of miles from your home was worth killing for no good reason.
What if you did go 4x4 and got your only vehicle stuck hundreds of miles from home? There are so many things that could go wrong by being impetuous about killing EVERY zombie you see. What if you draw enough attention to yourself that a bunch of bandits decide that your easy prey being stuck in a field with no backup and no hope? The list goes on for all the bad things that could happen just because you HAD to kill one stupid rot-bag.
Best to cut your losses and go home.
