Ring of Protection from Undead?

Unread post by MaxxSterling »

So, just another unclear and confusing item... Any one know where the rules for this are listed in a book, any book, even splicers or Ninja Turtles in Hollywood, I don't care. I'm running off the simple protection spell but I'd like to find a way around this ring. Having a ring that holds zombies at bay kind of takes the fun out of a zombie themed campaign mission, ya know? Any thoughts...

hummm, can't speculate. Could you state the location of said ring?

There are some Things in the PF2 MB (mostly magic items) where the GM has to make a decision about the details of what the magic item does.
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.

It's listed under magic rings/amulets/medallions in the magic items section of the core book. Sorry, don't know the page.

It says on page 253 of PFRPG that holds them at pay for 10,000 gold but to make the wearer
impervious to vampire gaze/mind control cost an additional 45,000. Holding them a bay is pretty
much the same as holding up a cross/holy symbol.

For all intents, there is no 'way around' a magic ring that holds a particular monster, in this case, the undead, at bay, especially when the undead in question is a zombie. However, while the undead are pretty much incapable of coming within like 10 feet of one of these rings, there's nothing stopping them from picking up rocks, sticks, daggers, et al, and throwing them at the wearer. Another stipulation is to treat the ring as a holy symbol in that it must be seen by the creature for them to be affected. If the wearer has a pair of gloves or gauntlets or if engaged in combat, such as swinging his sword, axe or whatever around, and thus keeping his ring bearing hand in relatively constant motion, the ring cannot be seen by the undead and are thus unaffected by it. I will admit, these seem like some pretty cheap shot nitpicky little details that could **** off a player to no end ("I'm wearing the ring, they can't come close to me!") but at least they're relatively feasible.

Good luck and great gaming! :D

Greetings and Salutations. While JuliusCreed makes some good points (some of which I'd have mentioned myself), there's another thought I wanted to include. In this case, it may depend on how big/long/large the mission/campaign is. If it's some isolated dungeon crawl, I don't have much to add. But, if this is something where there's a large group of people in danger (such as a town/city with more of a Dead Reign type feel), then there's another element to consider. People who know about the ring may want to steal it for themselves. "Why should he be safe?! I don't want to die either!" People who want to protect their families, or just worried about their own neck. These individuals won't be held at bay by the ring, and if the character is protecting the group that can leave an excellent surprise/sneak attack, smashing the character in the back of the head with a rock and then (while the character is dazed) stealing his ring. Then it's trying to steal it back AND deal with the zombies. Even if the attack fails, the sudden attack might create an entirely new threat. This may not be the original plan, but not to be overlooked (in my opinion). Anyways, I think that's all for now. Thank you for your time and patience, please have a nice day. Farewell and safe journeys for now.

in the same vein, if there is a more powerful and more intelligent undead controlling the zombies. He'd could employ non Undead minions as well to steal/take down the wearing of such an item.

I enjoy those aforementioned ideas, but I think they could be tweaked. Perhaps the ring could have been a family heirloom of a dwarf or elf clan and they want the ring back! Then when the ring is eventually snagged the party would have to run around trying to reclaim it. Then all sorts of shenanigans could happen like maybe a troll could find the ring, and would have to be defeated in order to get the ring back where it "rightfully" belongs.

Another idea, the ring only works during the daytime. Maybe the ring would only repel the undead while the sun is bright, but when it is so dark, the undead are actually attracted to the ring! This would make for an interesting story, and to make it even "worse" the ring might get stuck on the wearer's finger creating a need to remove it somehow.

The spell amulets in PFRPG. And give the zombies rocks, archery, blowguns, throwing stars, knifes, etc.
