Behemoth Explorer does any group use them?

Unread post by runebeo »

Has anyone used them as a mobile base, science lab or hospital? It's pretty tough with 500 M.D.C., can carry 200 tons of cargo, the Mini-Missile give it OK defense, but the Behemoth Explorer has such limited speed at 40 mph, yet with such height can easily travel through dense forests and has submersible capabilities as well. Being able to accommodate 20 to 60 passengers is good for support personal and you can make extra cash by transporting people & cargo.

I have had a few parties use them.

There was a campaign designed for its use but it never was played.

It was going to be a scientific studies platform.

I find hover mountaineers with extended cargo bays to be much more useful and cost effective.

Being that big you would think it should be around the 700 to 900 M.D.C. mark, yet its not a combat vehicle so it wouldn't have heavy armor. Free Quebec should make a combat version with laser resistant armor and boom guns, but the price tag would be like half a billion credits.

There are two reasons I'd never use a Behemoth explorer. The first one is that if you are in a Behemoth explorer, everyone and their grandma will know when you are even remotely nearby. The second reason is that it's just... well... it seems like a bad idea to be riding in a giant walking aluminum box with luxury features. A group of determined bandits could just take the vehicle down and sell the damaged vehicle to the black market for a lot of money, or just steal it while the group is away. I might get one if I could find an ambitious enough techno wizard to give it invisibility: simple. Then I'd feel comfortable.

What book was it that the adventure group had a BE that had tank treads instead of the standard issued legs?

Starting off a merc group we had one for operations base. it also provided medical and a place for our operators to do field work. one of my City operators lived in one. the way the BE is used isnt for traveling solo a number of things can take down a BE with little hassle.
I have a PC that bought one in order to convert it to hover and use it as a Luxery RV. but that was in a PH campaign where it was only 1/3 the price.
but the best use I have ever had a player do was as a mobile strip bar. he highered a 20 man team to protect it and provide security while it traveled.

Mobile strip bar could be a lot of fun and hard for the wife to track you down too. Put in a mini-casino level and a few hot tubs on the roof and you'll never have to leave. Great for dinosaur hunting safaris and deep sea fishing as well.

The Darn Neenok expedition (Rifts WB:27 Adventure in Dinosaur Swamps) use a modified one for their exploration of Dinosaur Swamps. I think it's a great idea for a campaign.

I had an player who had one for his operator as a mobile shop.

I greatly prefered the player whose operator used the salvaged, armoured, and heavily modified winnibego.

could the winnabego strawberry jam you?

I have not had the use for a BE since PB started to define the world. we used to use them in adventures when the there were like 6 books, now they are kinda outdated for the most part. I did use them for a twist in the Mars part of Mutants in orbit and it was the mobile command base for a military team exploring Mars.
It was cool cause it was big enough to house all the members. it was protected by 6 Robots (3 cs enforcers, 1 cs abolishers and 2 Titan heavy combat robots) 20 PAs assorted (I believe 8-10 old school sams and the rest were a mix. there were a couple modified moutaineers for the trip too.

Our group built a walkway around three sides of the Behemoth Explorer and used 4 robot dogs with realistic fur coverings, tear gas sprayer & duel ion blaster upgrades to help guard ours and they were great for backup.

A player I use to game with years ago did the same thing. For an operator, cyber-doc or any of the like, it's not a bad piece of equipment. The speed is slow, but when we played we pretty much used it for all around travel. The PA and the superhuman were faster, but the operater made an "auto-pilot" which would drive itself so we could be inside, taking it easy. the operator also rigged it to move at around 60 MPH. Not much faster, but you could usually get from one place to another in a few days of constant traveling which never wore anyone out.

The GM, when we encountered things wouldn't really attack it directly, mainly cause he felt bandits and the like wanted it, rather than wanted to scrap it. The only time it got attacked directly was when we took it to a dragons cave. Typically, we'd park it miles away from most hostile locations. When in/near a city, it saved us money on a place to say, and we had a locker in it for food and water (Our PA would go out and kill deer with his robot hands and just bring it back).

the mobile strip bar also provided a good source of income for his player. figuring around 4k credits a night from tips, not to mention cover charge and drinks it worked to give him extra cash in hsi pocket and paid for it self. the only sad thing was when he decided to sell ti in order to go dimensional traveling...... ohh well

Their are some gigantic rifts through out the world like the one the Xiticix come in the art in the main book. The Explorer could go dimensional traveling with you and if your group has a shifter I bet he could open a huge enough rift at a nexus point as well. Imagine being able to take your luxury condo to other worlds with you, sure come in handing if you did get stranded off world with a vehicle that can carry 200 tons of supplies.

one of the other players asked him if he was shure that they could get a rift big enough, he just want to pay extra for the merc team he highered to protect it or the strippers, plus he actualy said what if we go to a dimension where robotis wont function?

So has anyone used the NGR version, the Super Cargo Hauler? It maxes out at 700 MDC and has a speed of 120 mph.

I've thought of using the Super Cargo Hauler just for the fact it is a much better vehicle then the Behemoth explorer. It's closer to the ground for one thing, has more MDC, can move fast for it's supposed size and considering it's mass that sucker can run over just about anything. Just shoot the tall obstructions in front of the vehicle with the laser turret, let them fall down, and then ride over. Also, unless someone is very familiar with the vehicle, no one is going to chase after it just for the intimidation factor. A giant path of burned and crushed tree trunks with signs of treads similar to those used by tanks and other heavy vehicles. Also, the vehicle doesn't take as much skill to repair as the Behemoth, as the means of locomotion are treads instead of complex robotic legs. Again, logistically it is more sound to replace and repair giant treads then to replace a destroyed leg. Also, imagine the damage to the passengers of a behemoth that had a leg shot out.

TIIIIMBERRRRRR!

shoot out a tread of a super cargo hauler it just stops moving. 8-)

We recently hired a Psi-Operator to upgrade our Behemoth to Main Body - 575 and boost the Speed to 48 mph. For extra defense and support our Squad we hired a City-Technologist who is also a full medical doctor and specialist in cybernetics. She has set up a VR terminal in the Behemoth and another in our Rolling Thunder to control her 4 VR-500X “Stinger”mini-robot helicopters from Australia, well armed with a rail gun & mini-missiles and loaded with tons of sensors & optics, can be flown up to 50 to hundred miles from the terminal and great for surveillance and air support when the Squad needs backup.

There is so many possibilities with a walking apartment building. Its not meant as a combat vehicle, but adding some artillery and medium long rockets could keep it far enough away to keep it out of the main action and still support the group. We decided to not to go overboard with too much armaments or including TW upgrades so we won't be harassed by the CS that much and being able hang out in the Burbs of the CS cities to make deliveries and set up shop as a casino, bar, strip club and as small trading post out in the wilderness. Nothing like being able to transport 20 to 40 support personnel, its like bring a small town with you. Hire a good crew of versatile craftsmen and make some deals with merchants to set up shop on board and let them sell their wares to near by towns. Think about the things you can do with a caravan of theses and with a few bridge air locks, their all the same height so you could connect as many them as you want to form a community even underwater or a mobile factory to produce nearly anything if you find the resources. How much to do you think a town would pay for a mobile nuclear power plant, school, hospital or even hotel that if attacked could runaway? The price of the behemoth is high, but the possibilities of making cash with them is high as well.
